Program Info

ACAPview primary current ability is as a image browser, and is especially good for quick viewing of files that are in subdirectories. This is because it has the ability to treat sub directories as sections to a directory and show them while browsing the start directory. It also supports auto advance and zoom. It also has a secondary file back-up function.

This program is not finished; ultimately it will be a multi-filetype quickviewer with built in file functions. It is planned to superceed several other ACAPsoft programs, including TwinSeek, Ute, jFolder, Chop and CryptIt. Prior to its release we hope to add, among other features, the ability to view all files as text or hex, and we also plan to add an optional tree view.

Installation

Run "Setup.exe" and follow the instructions. To remove ACAPview, use the "Add/Remove Programs" option in the Control Panel. ACAPview stores all its data files in the designated application data area, often "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\ACAPsoft\ACAPview". If you would prefer that it saves in the same directory as ACAPview either run the program from a removable drive, such as a floppy of a USB drive, or delete the "DefSet.txt" file from the ACAPview directory.

Use

When ACAPview starts it by default shows the system Pictures folder and is in Deep Random. File information is shown in the title bar and to see another file you either click on the window or use the arrow keys. Futher details are below.

Main

In the main window the current image is show at the maximum size that can be shown in the window. (Correct proportions are maintained at all times.) In the title bar the image name is shown, as well as the image size, scaling data, as well as the directory information. To see the next image you use the right arrow key, the space bar, or you can click the screen. If the Select Mode is one of the Random modes then the next image is selected randomly, otherwise the next image in series is shown. If the Select Mode is one of the Linear modes then the left arrow key will show the previous image. Also in the Linear modes, pressing "Shift" as well as an arrow key will cause ACAPview to jump forward of back an amount which is roughly 10% of the total files indexed.

Zoom is activated when you press and hold the mouse button and then move the pointer. The view will then change to twice the scaling as the previous view. (E.g. If the view was 95% it will become 180%.) While in zoom mode you can increase the scaling to 4x and 8x by using the mouse wheel.

The Linear and Random Select Modes have an option known as Deep. In this mode sub directories are seen as part of the main directory. This enables the Random modes to select from all sub-directories by simply selecting a base directory. In the case of the Linear modes the directories are shown in order. That is, if there is a directory called "Apple", and a file called "Orange", "Apple" and all of its contents, including sub-directories, will come before "Orange". No matter how many files are in a given directory, the most that ACAPview can index at once it 100,000. This is due to the excessive memory requirement. (The finished version will allow this to be overridden.)

Right clicking in the screen will bring up a menu. The menu options are:

ACAPview Options

Many of ACAPviews options will be... well optional. But not yet.

Backup

A major feature of ACAPview will be an integrated backup utility. At this stage it's rather simple, only controlable via the command line and the output directory is fixed at "C:\Abyss\Backup\ACAPview". Only recently modified files are copied, and the last backup time data is stored in a database. A special feature is the "Roll" ability. This function copied the last backup and then groups past backups together in a top down tree format. The frequency of the copies is user controlable, but the intention was for a hourly "Roll" resulting in backups from 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours... all the way to 512 hours / 21 days.

Command Line Options

ACAPview supports Command Line options for more flexible starting and to access special functions. More will come!

.
Backup/b=Backup to the default backup directory. For mode details please refer to the Backup section of this ReadMe.
Roll/rRoll backups. For mode details please refer to the Backup section of this ReadMe
FileFILENAMEDirect command line file loading is also supported.

Programmers Notes

This is one of my long term program plans; a light multipurpose quick viewer. Currently it can't do its intended role very well as it only handles images, but it will be worked on over time. (This program used to be called "SinViewr".)

I will be using this program extensively and adding the occasional tweak depending on what I like and I do not. If you are interested in a light multipurpose quick viewer then please send me information on what you think would be good features and what would not. Please do remember that I want this to be more of a viewer than an editor.

ACAPview is programmed using MASM32 assembly language and has been tested on Win2000, WinXP and Vista.

System Impact Statement

We go to great lengths to reduce system impact, but we feel that it is still important to explain here what our programs do to your system. If you feel we are missing something, or you need further clarification, please contact us.

RegistryThe installer that comes with ACAPview uses the registry only for the required un-installation data, and not at all if you use the "Extract Only" mode. ACAPview will also use the registry if you associate it with image files.
System SettingsACAPview will set itself to load BMP, JPG and GIF files by default if you select the "Set File Associations" option.
FilesAll of its program files are stored in the installation directory, and all of its data files are stored in the designated application data area, often "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\ACAPsoft\ACAPview". If you would prefer that it saves in the same directory as ACAPview either run the program from a removable drive, such as a floppy of a USB drive, or delete the "DefSet.txt" file from the ACAPview directory. These directories can be opened via the About box.
NetworkThe installer does not access the internet in any way, but the ReadMe does have three graphic files that are stored on the internet. (They are not used as web-beacons, merely spacers and images for the payment processors.)
CPUACAPview does not have any CPU demanding functions under most circumstances, but depending on image size, image number and CPU speed you might see a system slow down while preparing indexes and loading large images.
MemoryACAPview will use around 600 bytes per file with the directory indexes, with the maximum requirement being 60MB. In most cases this will not be a problem, even on systems with under 256MB, as it never requires all of this memory at one time. (This has been tested.)
